In JIROUX & Al, 2014. Première contribution à l'étude des Monochamini d'Asie du Sud-Est (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Lamiinae). Les Cahiers Magellanes., Aristobia birmanica Gahan, 1894 is considered a synonym of Aristobia approximator (Thomson, 1865).
In my view, these are two different species, and biogeography repeatedly shows us that the distribution of Malaysian and Indonesian species is very limited in mainland Asia. I have dark specimens from Laos and Thailand with this same pattern of spots and a thin yellow median band on the pronotum, which bear no resemblance whatsoever to Thomson’s type specimen!
I now need to provide evidence for my ‘hunch’, and I am working on it...
